Free Pattern for an 18" American Girl Doll Reversible Dress

This is Part 1 of a 3 part pattern & tutorials mini series for an 18 inch doll outfit.  
Part 1 is the reversible dress pattern and tutorial.  


Here is the pattern.  You can click on it and print it at 100% or go to the PDF.

Materials:
1/4 yards of 2 fabrics
thread
11" of 1/2 wide velcro

Optional Materials:
ric rac
2 tiny buttons

*If you plan to add the embroidery, refer to Part 2 of this tutorial (it will be up soon) and complete it before cutting out the pattern. 

*If you are going to add buttons on to the dress(es), do so at this point.
You are done!  :o)

    This looks like a great pattern to work with. Love the style, and the addition of matching capris. I also think the party dress is lovely. It's so nice to have the child's dress pattern to match that one. I just discovered your site, and am ready to start sewing. Now, if I can scale the AG patterns down to fit the Melissa and Doug "Mine-to-Love' dolls, I can outfit the entire "family." Many thanks!!

    A few days ago I purchased a 'Easy' doll pattern but turned out terrible even after following the poorly written instructions. I wish I had tried this one first- it turned out so pretty and perfect. Thanks so much

      I hate it when something like that happens. It's why I usually make up my own patterns, even though it feels like I take 4x the amount of time I otherwise would.     I found this and thought it would be cute for my daughters Stella doll. When I printed it off, it was definitely too big but I kept that pattern for my AG dolls when she gets bigger. I reprinted it at 70% and its the perfect size for her current doll. Now, to pick up my iron from the store on Monday. :)

    Love this dress, but for some reason I'm not understanding how to put the two dress pieces together. I get to the part where I sew the sleeves together and I'm stuck. Can you help me understand it better? I'm just drawing a blank.

      After step 3, before you add the buttons, turn your dresses with the right side of the fabric facing the right side of the fabric of the different dresses. Now, sew the armholes together and the neckhole together. The two different dresses are joined at these three points. You then pull the two dresses apart. And seam along 1 edge with the right sides of the same fabrics facing each other, from the bottom of one dress up to the armhole and down to the bottom of the other dress. I know that sounds a little confusing, but that's how you do it. I hope the pictures help you.

    I must be doing something wrong!!!!! I can't for the life of me figure out how to turn this dress right side out. You can't just flip it from the back because of the arm holes. HELP!
